STATEMENT ON COMBEE RENAMING

Lakeland – Earlier this week, the Polk County Commission voted to “delete” the name of a notable personage in Polk County’s history from the name of a public building, where it had been for nearly a quarter of a century. And so goes more Florida and American history down the 'memory hole'. Why? Is the namesake an ax-murder? No. Is he a rapist? No. But his name is to be toppled and taken down from a building at taxpayer expense as part of a ‘refresh’, the newest euphemism for ‘cleansing’ of our history. “This is nothing more than the same cultural Marxism we are seeing with the Munn Park Memorial, the Robert E. Lee statue in New Orleans, and on and on” said David McCallister, Save Southern Heritage – FL spokesman. As a reminder, here is an abbreviated list of other history that has been ‘refreshed’ in the last year:

• Lee Street in Hollywood was ‘refreshed’ to “Liberty” Street; • Wescott Hall at Florida State University was “refreshed” by removal of statue of the school’s founder, Francis Eppes; • Robert E. Lee Elementary School in Tampa was “refreshed” by burning to the ground after a suspicious fire; • Cahoon and Van Buren Middle Schools in Tampa were “refreshed” when they were consolidated and renamed Carter G. Woodson K-8 School;

And watch for more “refreshing” on the horizon:

• Florida State University College of Law will be "refreshed" when the “B.K. Roberts Hall” sign is removed; • Calls are being made to “refresh” Stephen C. O’Connell Center at University of Florida; • Munn Park will be "refreshed" when its 100+ year old veterans memorial is removed; • Statuary hall will be ‘refreshed’ when Florida war hero Edmund Kirby-Smith is removed from Statuary Hall • Activists in Orlando want to "refresh" the name of Stonewall Jackson Middle School.

None of these individuals subject to the "refreshing" was convicted of any crime, only tainted with allegations. Sound familiar? Meanwhile the City of Gainesville’s Transit Facility is still named after former Congresswoman Corrine Brown, who was tried and convicted on 18 counts of fraud and is currently ‘serving’ the people of Florida in Federal Prison. Perhaps it is time for Florida to stop sending the bill to taxpayers for needless “refreshing” of public assets based on whether or not those ‘in charge’ agree with actions or opinions of historical figures honored decades, if not centuries ago. After all, that is what Nazis and Isis does. Americans are better than that.

SAVE SOUTHERN HERITAGE Inc. is a not for profit corporation that educates & advocates on behalf of Southern Heritage & History. It was started in 2015 in response to the knee-jerk Anti-Southern institutionalized bullying and “Eracism” levied against the people of South Carolina by Governor Nikki Haley, after she broke all previous agreements about how South Carolina’s historical veterans and their symbols should be treated and respected. The Florida branch was activated in mid-January 2016, in response to three initiatives in the Florida Legislature that are part of a hate campaign led by Anti-American extremists, who refuse to respect the various cultures that make up the fabric of Florida’s society. Since that time, it has grown in membership and has been active in battles over American History and throughout Florida including the successful “We’ll Remember in November:" Campaigns More info: www.sshfl.org.
